I visit this page every week to read about love across oceans, love that has been lost, love that lasts a lifetime and love that never will be forgotten. Today I want to share a different kind of love with you – the love of my country in hard times. *

I have always considered my country the safest in the world. This was my little country where we didn’t need police in the streets, where we could play in the streets with no parents watching us, where we didn’t have to lock our doors and where we are so few people that every person is a brother and a friend. This all changed a few days ago.

Norway is changed forever. We will never get back the Norway we had before July the 22nd - this because we will never forget. We will never forget the day a man got onto the scout camp and killed over 60 young adults. We will never forget the children’s screams. We will never forget the tears of the parents. We will never forget the stories the victims have told us. We will never forget the ocean of flowers outside the church. We will never forget our crying king.

No one is left untouched. We all feel so much pain. We are all crying for our children. We are all in shock. We are all watching the lists of names in the newspaper; names of children that was taken away from us in such a tragic way. It is so easy to hate the murderer. Somehow, it makes the sorrow easier to hate the man that caused all this. However, in the middle of all this, our prime minister, our king, our children and the children that survived the attack tell us not to hate.

All this darkness has taught us the value of love. Muslims are arranging concerts where over 200 000 people gather together in their hopelessness. Professional singers publish songs that they give out for free to show their support. Tour the France has a minute of silence in respect of the lost lives. Candles are lid in every window. Strangers cry on strangers’ shoulders.

This is my safe, little country and one person is not going to change that. When one person shows this much hate, we are going to show him how much love we are able to show together. I don’t think there is any better way to punish this murderer in than having his actions bringing us closer together.

Norway will never be the same again. The pain will never go away, and the tears will not be wiped away. They will be there and remind us of what we have sacrificed. It will remind that love is the only reasons to hate. The terrorist have taken a few of our roses, but can never stop spring from coming.

I could not have been more proud to call myself a Norwegian, hence the circumstances.
Thank you for all the support coming from all over the world!

  1. Fellow Norwegian here. I have never felt so much love from and for my country as I have these last days. We will never forget, but we will also get through this with the help from the strength and love we have for eachother. Oslo is covered in flowers and the streets are filled with love. I love my country, my people and the rest of the world for the support they have given us.

  6. "When one person shows this much hate, we are going to show him how much love we are able to show together." That made me cry so hard. I wish you all the best for the future and I know that Norway will be strong enough to get through this hard time. The whole world supports you.

  8. Your neighbor and friendJuly 27, 2011 at 3:50 AM

Sweden here. Our prime minister urged all citizens to participate in a quiet minute for our dear neighbors. During that minute the city I live in stoped completely. The trains stoped on their rails, the phones got silent... It was magic and it gave me goosebumps.

So, it's true what you said. Together we will fight evil with it's worst enemy - LOVE

  14. I quote what someone else wrote, "Everyone in Sweden feels as sad as you do to, guess we never has felt this close..". I live in a small town in Sweden and yesterday we had a manifestation to show our support, a manifestation like that has never happened in my city before.

    Love.

  21. More support and love from Finland. This tragedy didn't happen in Norway - it happened on Earth. The whole world prays for the victims, their families, friends and everyone who had to take part in the horrible shootings. Never forget this. The world is grieving with you. I hope there is some consolation in this; even if everything feels hopeless.
Be strong, breathe, pray and never stop loving.

  22. Estonia is with you.!

"When one person shows this much hate, we are going to show him how much love we are able to show together."

Sad to think that something horrible has to happen before people start sharing love that's inside of us. In sadness, in happyness, in every feeling - love puts us all breathe in the same rhythm.

There's 1 % more goodness in the world. This here - is the proof.

  24. Beautiful, beautiful post! Though I feel it's important to correct the fact that this was NOT a scout camp, it was a summer camp for politically active youths involved in Norway's labor party. These were kids with opinions, opinions this terrorist I will not write the name of disagreed with. And because he disagreed with the political stands of these bright young people, his sick twisted mind thought that massacring them was the solution to be heard.

The answer from the norwegian people was to become even more democratic and open, the exact difference from what the terrorist wanted. More people have registered in political parties, and the youths who survived won't give up politics, rather the opposite.

  36. On Satuarday, I was quite surprise to see Amy Winehouse's death all over the news when over 90 children was killed in Norway by a bombing. Innocent children that didn't do anything. It's not like Amy Winehouse is not important, but one celebrity is not anymore important that the death of over 90 children. Support from New York. Even though I know the damage is not reversible, stay strong.

  51. ahh. this was lovely.
i think the whole entire world is feeling the tragedy of the roses that were taken. As sad as this is, things like this bring the world together on the same page, which i think is pretty amazing, and you're right, i think there isn't any better way to punish the murderer than showing just how much his actions that caused so much pain is nothing compared to the support and love that brings the world together. we're all stonger as one right?
